Serving Laffayette/Oxford/University (LOU)

The Conversation Partners program pairs Ole Miss American and current International students with new International students to help them make connections and adjust to life in America.
One international student and one Ole Miss native or near-native-English-speaker to become conversation partners who meet for one hour each week to talk informally about any topics they are both interested in. The partners can decide when and where to meet. Partners commonly meet around once a week for lunch, coffee, short trips, sporting events, and lots more!

The Conversation Partner Program is beneficial for both partners. It helps international students become more comfortable speaking English and gives them a chance to ask questions they might not feel comfortable asking in class. They can also learn about American culture and gain perspective on what it is like to be a student at an American university. Their partner may also show them around campus and Oxford.

The program also gives Ole Miss students the opportunity to get to know a person from another country and learn about another culture without leaving Oxford! It also lets the student see what the Ole Miss experience might be like for an international student.

Some students who are learning a second language are able to participate in language exchanges with partners who natively speak that language, allowing the conversations to be half in English and half in the international student’s language.

Expectations of Conversation Partners

  • Assist new international students during Welcome Week (the week before classes begin) in getting acquainted with life in America and at Ole Miss
  • Initiate and maintain contact with partner(s) throughout the semester and meet regularly, around once a week as possible (you and your partner will schedule these meetings for whichever time works best for both of you)
  • Complete the monthly check-in to let us know how things are going between you and your partner(s)
  • Attend monthly Conversation Partner meetings as able
  • Attend at least 5 IASA organized events throughout the semester (ex: welcome week activities, language table, culture night, picnic, etc.)

The Application for Summer I (June), Summer 2 (July), and Fall (August - December) is now open. The Priority I Deadline is Friday, April 7th, 2017 and the Priority II Deadline is Friday, May 12th, 2017, both at 11:59 pm. Those interested are welcome to apply at any time up until the start of the semester in which you are applying for, but the earlier you apply, the earlier you will receive your partner pairing information and the more likely that you will be paired with someone from your culture of interest.
